Summary 

The Swiss Society of Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Head & Neck Surgery inaugurated the SFITS in 2017 with their Lasers in Oto-Rhino-Laryngology Head & Neck Surgery Symposium. We are glad to organize another Laser Symposium this year.

Lasers in ORL-HNS have a longstanding tradition starting with CO2 laryngeal microsurgery in the 1960’s. In the following decades, lasers delivered through fibers were developed: Neodinuim-YAG, Erbium YAG, Thulium, and CO2. Fiber-based laser extended surgical applications beyond the larynx to the trachea, esophagus, pharynx, nose, and ears. Therefore, lasers are used nowadays by all ORL-HNS specialties. Different commercially available lasers use different wavelengths and thus have different tissue interactions. These specific laser-tissue effects, as well as laser physics and security are taught in this course.

This training combines theoretical and practical sessions and fulfills the requirements for accreditation of the Swiss fmCh laser commission.
