Microsurgical skills are paramount to several surgical specialties, such as plastic and reconstructive surgery and neurosurgery. Microsurgery has evolved and in order to be a part of this evolution, it is necessary to start microsurgical training and let it become a mindset, a state of mind and perhaps a form of meditation.


This course comprises some of the most useful exercises you need to practice in microsurgery.

This course is an Advanced course on Hand Microsurgery, plastic reconstructive surgery and neurosurgery.
Participants will carefully be selected depending on their application and level.


Registration fee

  • CHF 0.- for HUG residents
  • CHF 1'500.- for residents outside the HUG

Program - Day 1
DEMONSTRATION & PRACTICAL WORKSHOP ON SYNTHETIC MATERIAL

08:00-08:15 - Welcome

08:15-08:30 - Lecture - Basic principles of microsurgery (microscopes, operation ergonomics) - Dr. Renato Gondar

08:30-08:45 - Lecture - History and caring for microsurgical instruments - S&T

08:45-09:00 - Lecture - Basic principles of rodent anesthesia and animal welfare

09:00-09:15 - Demonstration - Suture and knot techniques on flower petal

09:15-11:30 - Exercise - Suture techniques on flower petal with 8-0 sutures

11:30-12:30 - Lunch (will be served; but hands-on work may continue)

12:30-12:45 - Lecture - Basics of microvascular suturing - Dr. Victor Volovici

12:45-13:00 - Demonstration - End-to-end anastomosis on chicken wing

13:00-17:00 - Exercise - End-to-end anastomosis on chicken wing

17:00-17:30 - Wrap-up

DEMONSTRATION & PRACTICAL WORKSHOP

08:15-08:45 - Lecture - Microsurgery in neurosurgery (ischemia) - Prof. Raphael Guzman

08:45-09:30 - Demonstration - End-to-end anastomosis of the common carotid artery

09:30-12:30 - Exercise - End-to-end anastomosis on the common carotid artery

12:30-13:30 - Lunch (will be served; but hands-on work may continue)


13:30-14:00 - Lecture - Microsurgery in hand surgery (peripheral nerve and replantations) - Prof. Jean-Yves Beaulieu

14:00-14:30 - Demonstration - End-to-end n. Ischiadicus

14:30-17:00 - Exercise - n. ischiadicus / end-to-end anastomosis of the common carotid artery

17:00-17:30 - Wrap-up
